Syriac Formation and the Problem of the Gap
The mature technology of formation
A major development occurs through the Syriac Christian tradition: **Aphrahat, Ephrem,
the Book of Steps, the Macarian Homilies,** and **Isaac of Nineveh**.
This layer is crucial because Syriac Christianity preserves a distinctive emphasis on
transformation, ascetic formation, mercy, purity, humility, spiritual struggle, and
progressive maturation.
It supplies what the earlier ethical reconstruction alone could not: **a mature technology
of spiritual formation.** The question shifts from
> "What should a disciple do?"
to
> "How does a human being actually become capable of doing it?"
That question marks the transition toward WMT proper.
The Book of Steps and the gap
The Book of Steps became particularly important. Its distinction between the **Upright**
and the **Perfect** supplied a key conceptual insight — and exposed a problem.
If the tradition recognizes substantially different levels of spiritual maturity, how does
an ordinary person actually move from one to the other?
The insight developed within WMT was that the missing element was **an explicit
developmental path**. The project therefore did not seek to reproduce the Book of Steps.
It attempted to solve a problem perceived within it:
> How do we build the road between the Upright and the Perfect?
**This is the conceptual birthplace of the seven stages.**
The seven stages are therefore not a classification system. They function as a
developmental ladder, a formation process, a gradual ascent, and a practical bridge.
This is among the most important transitions in the entire genealogy — and it is the
single point at which the curriculum's architecture is most directly explained by its
history.
*A caution carried into the curriculum:* the Upright/Perfect distinction can be misread
as a two-tier Christianity in which ordinary life is spiritually second-rate. Chapter
Twenty-Five (`WMT C25`) argues explicitly that this is the wrong reading and would be a
damaging one.
