How does the heart change?

A Word Before the Sixth Stage

My friend,

We are leaving the hospital.

You have named the wounds. You have learned to watch the movements of your heart without panic, to trace a symptom back to its root, and to look at your own portion of a conflict before assigning anyone else's. That work does not end — I still do it, most evenings — but it is no longer the main event.

Healing asked: how is the heart repaired? This stage asks something different and better: how is it remade?

The distinction matters. A repaired heart is the old heart with the damage attended to. A remade heart wants different things. It is the difference between a man who has stopped being cruel by an effort of will and a man in whom cruelty has simply lost its appeal.

I want to set your expectations honestly, because this stage disappoints people who arrive with the wrong picture.

Transformation does not look like much from outside. I expected, when I got here, some visible arrival — a change others would remark on, a settled sense of having become someone. What actually happens is quieter and stranger: you notice one afternoon that a thing which used to require enormous effort has become almost automatic, and you cannot say when it changed. You did not feel it happening. You never do.

Four chapters. The hidden life, where change actually occurs. The recovery of wonder, which keeps truth from hardening. The patience of gradual growth, which is the medicine for the impatience the first two will produce in you. And finally the deepest question of all — what God is actually doing in a human interior, and what your part in it is.

One warning before we start. This is the stage where spiritual pride is most dangerous, precisely because there is now something real to be proud of. In the early stages you had nothing much to display. Now you may. Watch for it. I did not, and it cost me years.
